Working at this Apart and Together

I’m so proud of my husband.  He has really embraced this mission and has been tremendously supportive.  He has been packing his lunch everyday with lots of fruits and vegetables and chicken or fish.  He’s even been giving me items to add to the grocery list of, like raisons for his oatmeal.  Oatmeal!  Everyday, he eats oatmeal now instead of toast and fried potatoes with his eggs.  He’s still eating eggs, but only one yoke and two whites.  This is fantastic!  He used to be the guy that would make country gravy on a regular basis.

Also, he’s been working out on his own too.  He goes to the garage to work (he does custom framing, furniture pieces, and sketches for his muralist clients) and he ends up lifting weights while he’s out there.  It’s so nice both be dedicated to health and fitness at the same time and work together as a team.  Again, I’m so proud of my husband!

    Buying smaller clothes...

I can’t believe how motivated Gary and I are!  We’re into the second week of great food and exercise and we haven’t weaned yet.  I feel so confident and mentally strong!

I feel so positive about this journey that I went shopping for smaller clothes with a dear friend of mine that is also making changes to her families eating habits.  I currently wear a size 22.  I purchased a pair of slacks and a pair of jeans in every size down to a 14.  (Lane Bryant has clearance up to 80% right now.)  I’m so excited to fit into my new clothes and see the sizes get smaller!!!!

    Monkey See, Monkey Do

Our children learn from watching us and they want to eat what we eat.  Alexander wants to eat off our plates (even when he doesn’t like it, he wants to try it.)  I was surprised to see him walking around with a green bell pepper slice in his mouth yesterday that Gary had given him.  He chewed it for a few minutes and ultimately spit it out, but he tried it!  I felt so good about that.  I don’t feed my son hot dogs and macaroni & cheese, because we don’t eat it.  However, Alex wanted pizza and ice cream and fat laden nachos.  See where I’m going with this, what a difference a week has made.

I’m so excited to be on this journey and have life lessons reminded to me daily.  We ultimately just want to be healthy and happy and we’re on the right path.  It feels good!

    Week one results!

Okay, Gary and I weighed last Saturday, December 30, 2007 and started eating better.  So instead of giving ourselves extra days before we record our weight loss, we decided that we'd continue to have our weigh in's on Saturdays to keep to just 7 days.

    Here are our results!

Off to a good start at the Zoo

It's amazing that after just a couple of days how much better we both feel.  I wake up with energy instead of staying lethargic in the morning.  Gary has already stopped needing Pepcid AC's.  He's been taking antacids for years and several times a day.  Just changing our diet for a couple of days has already shown really positive improvements.

Yesterday we took our son to the Oregon Zoo for the day.  It was rainy and a bit stormy, but so much fun!  There was hardly anyone there, so we didn't look like fools doing lunges down the walkways.  We suited up and stayed warm and dry.  We got a rain cover last year for the stroller for just around $12, which was a great investment.  I also packed us lunch and some snacks.  We had plain micro waved potatoes with the skin on, boneless skinless chicken breasts, sliced raw red peppers, and carrots.  Oh, and Gary had a banana and I had an apple.  We were satisfied, we didn't spend any money (since we already have an annual membership) and we got in 2 1/2 hours of walking.  It was a great day!

Biggest Loser, Million Pound Match - Entry Statement

My husband and I live in Portland, Oregon and are entering this purely to help us stay alive.  You see we both are in our thirties and have been over weight our entire adult lives.  We want to be around to raise our 15-month-old son, and have another child.  Gary is 6’5” and 310 pounds.  I fear he’s a walking heart attack waiting to happen the way he carries all of his weight around his chest and belly.  His goal is to gain muscle mass and lose about 90 pounds.  I, Sara, am 5’11” and 290 pounds.  I am big all over now, but really carry my weight in my legs and my big caboose.  So my goal is to lose a 120 pounds and get fit again.

So through a good healthy diet and vigorous exercise we plan on losing our excess weight, getting strong, and regaining our lost energy needed to keep up with young children. We’re both huge fans of the Biggest Loser and haven’t missed an episode (thank you DVR!)  We’ve learned a lot through the episodes and have been inspired over the years to learn more about fitness and nutrition.  We are cutting out the junk food, and changing our diet.  We will work out at home and help each other.  We are excited to have this forum to blog and document our journey.  It will be tremendous help and a whole lot of fun!  We’re finally ready to commit our goals for a lifetime!

We should win this competition because we are good, honest, hardworking individuals that are working as a team, and totally committed to our goals.  We not only want to inspire ourselves, we hope to inspire all those around us.
